Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission (EC), has urged EU heads of state to adopt a new common approach to visa issuance for Russian citizens to send “an even stronger message” regarding the ongoing geopolitical situation.

In her letter to the leaders of the political association, von der Leyen pointed out that, in light of the security threats that arrivals from Russia may pose, the EU is collaborating with member states to develop a more harmonized visa policy, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

She stated, “We intend to achieve greater clarity by the end of the year.”

Von der Leyen highlighted that the percentage of visa denials for Russian nationals has increased since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, but she believes that the EU can still enhance its message to Russians about the consequences of the war.

In addition to the visa discussions, the European Union is also gearing up for a summit on October 17-18, where representatives from the 27 member states are expected to reach an agreement on expanding arms supplies to Ukraine.

According to a spokesperson for the EU, “The goal regarding Ukraine is to renew our commitment to support the country, supply more weapons, and continue to do everything possible to ensure Ukraine’s victory.”
