Frank Chamizo and 6 other wrestlers will receive Olympic quotas instead of Russian and Belarusian wrestlers

It became known which wrestlers will go to the 2024 Olympic Games instead of the Russian and Belarusian wrestlers who won licenses, but the International Olympic Committee did not allow them to attend the Games in Paris for political reasons.

As a result, the Italian freestyle wrestler Frank Chamiso (74 kg), who scandalously lost his quota due to a mistake by the judges, can go to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The UWW decided to send instead of disqualified wrestlers those who lost the fights for the quota at those qualifying tournaments where the quotas were won by the excluded Russians, but only representatives of Europe.

For example, at the European qualification in Baku, the quota was won by Russian Magomedhabib Kajimagomedov, but he was not allowed to participate in the Olympics. Kajimagomedov’s quota could have been given to Timuraz Salkazanov (Slovakia) or Frank Chamizo (Italy), but since Salkazanov himself won the quota at the world tournament, Chamizo, who lost the final fight for the quota to Turan Bayramov (Azerbaijan), will receive the quota.

At the moment, the participation of Romanian wrestler Razvan Arnaut in the weight category up to 60 kg in Greco-Roman wrestling has been officially confirmed. Thus, the Armenian wrestler Gevorg Gharibyan (60 kg) will not receive an additional quota.

«The International Olympic Committee has sent to the UWW a list of 8 qualified athletes who are not eligible to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris for political and military reasons. We are talking about Russians and Belarusians. Therefore, we had to take into account their replacement.

There were several discussions in the Executive Committee about the criteria for replacing qualified athletes. Some of the members wanted the qualification to be based on the results of the World Championships, while another part, including me, insisted that it was right to grant the right to participate in Paris to an athlete who took a place immediately after a disqualified Russian or Belarusian. As is logical, if the qualification was obtained at the World Cup, then the next one on the list from the World Cup should rise.

If it was a qualifying tournament, then the next one from that tournament should qualify. In the category up to 60 kg, the Russian athlete qualified in Istanbul, where Arnaut was next on the list. Being a member of the Executive Committee, I was able to protect the interests of Romania, and thus we were able to qualify 5 athletes»,” said the President of the Romanian Federation Razvan Pyrkalab.

If it had been decided to give a quota according to the rating, then Gevorg Gharibyan (Armenia) I would have received an Olympic medal. the license.

In total, according to this principle, the Olympic quota will be received:

Freestyle wrestling:

57 kg: Vladimir Egorov (North Macedonia) — instead of Aryan Tyutrina at the European qualification.
