It is now official: Elina Avanesyan (ranked 58th in the WTA) has obtained Armenian citizenship and will compete under the Armenian flag starting from her next tournament.
According to Sportball24, Elina has already received her Armenian passport and changed her sporting citizenship from Russian to Armenian. She will represent Armenia in the upcoming Grand Slam tournament, the US Open, which starts on August 26th.
The 21-year-old tennis player currently holds the 58th position in the WTA rankings and recently reached the final of a WTA 250 series tournament for the first time in her career.
In the athlete’s profile on the WTA website, her Armenian citizenship is already indicated.
